With the growth of middle class and rapid urbanization in many cities, the number of large-scale commercial shopping and entertainment complexes is growing rapidly. As a result, the number of cinemas has increased dramatically in recent years with expectations of continued growth. This year, China has surpassed Japan to become the second-largest cinema market in the world.
The number, scale and complexity of retail, dining and entertainment projects continue to increase as developers and cities race to capture a share of growing domestic consumption. At present, the number of theaters in the first-tier cities tend to be saturated. There were 3832 new cinema screens in recent years of which 60% were constructed in second and third tier cites. It continued the expansion after 2013.
